Portafilter

The portafilter or portafilter gives its name to an entire category of machines and is an important tool for perfect extraction. The sieve is particularly important. Portafilter heads are available in chrome-plated or stainless steel in many different sizes, the most common being the E-61 standard with 58xx mm and its offshoots and further developments, but also special sizes such as Dalla Cortes 54xx mm or SAGEs 53xx mm are more or less common.

But be careful: the diameter of the portafilter is no guarantee of a perfect fit. Individual manufacturers like to use different dimensions for the wings of the portafilter heads, so incompatibilities are common.
